Hyperemesis gravidarum

Hyperemesis gravidarum.

What is hyperemesis gravidarum?

It is a rare disorder characterized by severe and persistent nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. It isn’t just a case of bad morning sickness. It’s being sick many times a day and being unable to keep any water/food down.

Studies show that 1 to 3 in every women will suffer from this.

From my own experience with hg, it was a very lonely time. It was at the very start of the pandemic and I felt I had no one to talk about it with. It wasn’t until later on in my pregnancy that I realised it’s more common than I thought.

I had lost a stone within a week, I was throwing up around 30 times + in one day. I couldn’t keep anything down, not even a sip of water. I remember laying on the bathroom floor telling my husband I needed an ambulance. I just felt like I needed help. Now my husband knows I’m an absolute drama queen, but he just thought I’m being sick it’s part of pregnancy etc. But this isn’t just morning sickness. It can be serious, especially due to dehydration. Many women will need to be hospitalised because of this. Again, because of being in a pandemic I was scared as it was to go to hospital, especially on my own so instead I dealt with  our doctors where I was prescribed a few different medications until I found one that eventually helped. However on my extremely bad days I wish I’d have known what I know now as I should have definitely seeked medical help from the hospital. If you are suffering from hg, be sure to tell your midwife / doctor so you can get the right treatment.

I did find an amazing Facebook group called  ‘Hyperemesis gravidarum and pregnancy sickness (uk group) ).. as soon as I joined this group I was so relieved, knowing other women are going through the same.

Fortunately for me, by week 22 it had eased a lot to a point I could stop medication. I would still have the odd days of being sick, but nothing like it was. However for a lot of women, they can experience it all the way through.

I really hope this blog has gave you an insight on hg. My inbox is always open if I can help in any way. Sometimes just speaking to someone who has experienced this can go a long way.

The only thing that got me through it was knowing that one day it would all be worth it. I would do anything for my daughter even if it meant I had to go through what I did.

If you’re currently experiencing hg, keep going. It will all be worth it the second they’re placed in your arm. You’ve got this, mama.

Lots of love, Sophie 💕
