Navigating Guilt as a working parent - Embrace the journey!
As parents, especially those of us with babies, the transition back to work or running our businesses can be incredibly challenging. It’s a topic that isn’t spoken about enough, yet it’s one that so many of us face. I want to share my experience to help normalise these feelings and reassure you that you’re not alone.
When I returned to work after having my baby, Daisy, I felt overwhelmed. I wasn’t just going back to my old job, I was also running a new business requires being all hands on deck, and I quickly realised that balancing my responsibilities with my desire to be present for my child was not going to be easy. The pressure to make my business a success weighed heavily on me, but the guilt of leaving Daisy behind was even more consuming.
It’s completely natural to feel this way. Many parents experience guilt and anxiety about leaving their little ones, fearing that something bad might happen while they’re away. It’s hard to shake the thoughts of what we might miss: first steps, first words, or simply just being the comfort of being there for our babies.
However, it’s important to remember that these feelings are valid and shared by many. Here are a few thoughts to consider:
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: It’s okay to feel guilty or anxious. Recognising that these emotions are a normal part of parenting can help you process them.
2. Focus on Quality Time: When you are with your baby, make that time count. Engage in activities that foster connection, ensuring that you cherish those moments together.
3. Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with fellow parents who understand your struggles. Sharing experiences can provide comfort and insight into how others cope.
4. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. You’re doing your best, juggling multiple responsibilities, and that deserves recognition.
5. Trust the Caregivers: If you have to leave your baby with someone else, trust that they will care for your little one as you would. Knowing they are in good hands can help ease your mind.
6. Remember who you are doing this for: Keep this in the back of mind while you are working, this should give you the ultimate motivation to help you and your family build a better life and future!
Returning to work or managing a business while parenting a baby is a unique challenge, but it’s also a journey filled with growth and learning. Embrace the complexities of this phase and remember that you are not alone. Your feelings are a testament to your love and dedication as a parent.
Let’s support one another through this beautiful, albeit challenging, adventure. Together, we can navigate the intricacies of being a working parent and celebrate both our professional and personal milestones.
